Getting Started with British Railway
Join Fourth Rail’s online railway, pick a role, and finish your first scored route cleanly.
British Railway is a released Roblox experience by Fourth Rail where you share live tracks with other players as a Driver, Guard, or Passenger. This getting-started guide is the on-ramp: how to join, what to do in the first hour, how Coins work, and which wiki pages to open before you chase difficult stock or the Brynmouth coastal extension.
Join the right places
Play from the official Roblox page (linked on our wiki hub). Optional but useful: join the Fourth Rail Roblox group and Discord at discord.gg/fourthrail for patch chatter and crew finding. This site—britishrailway.wiki—is an unofficial fan wiki, separate from the Fandom wiki and from the developers.
After you load in, take thirty seconds to identify spawn, depot, or role-select UI. Do not mash throttle in a crowded station throat until you know whether you are supposed to be driving, guarding, or riding.
Choose a role for hour one
Passenger is the gentlest tutor. You earn six Coins per stop while learning station names, dwell rhythm, and how serious Drivers treat signals. Ride a full route once before you claim a cab.
Driver is the headline role. You manage throttle, brakes, doors, and—on some stock—pantograph or bi-mode diesel. Score rises with clean stops and falls with speeding, SPADs, skipped stations, and ignored AWS. Read how to drive soon after your first attempt.
Guard is the crew multiplier. Looking For Guard / Friends / Other UI (expanded in version 1.4) helps you find Drivers. You handle whistle, signal bell, door procedures that can be class-specific, and tickets. See how to guard.

Desktop controls you must know on day one
Defaults matter because wrong brake habits create SPADs:
- W / S — throttle up / down
- A / D — brake apply / release on trains with a separate brake handle
- E — emergency brake
- T — doors in context; also used when answering a Guard buzzer in some workflows
- P — pantograph
- O — diesel engine toggle on bi-mode units
- H — whistle (Guard-focused)
- U — unlock panel
- R — local door
- Y — signal bell (Guard)
Full tables live on controls and the controls cheatsheet.
Your first Driver checklist
- Pick an easier route from community consensus on the routes tier list rather than the hardest coastal run.
- Set a calm throttle. Oversped by more than about five mph and you start collecting penalties.
- Treat red Danger aspects as absolute stops. A SPAD is a three-point penalty—details in signals and SPAD.
- On Caution, plan a slow toward roughly 45 mph; Preliminary caution means another restrictive aspect is coming; Proceed means line speed only when the road is truly clear.
- Stop at every scheduled station. Skipping stations hurts score and confuses Passengers.
- Respect AWS warnings instead of clicking them away out of habit.
- Use doors only when it is safe and, if you have a Guard, coordinate rather than racing the UI.
- Watch for the OFF indicator related to departure safety before you take power away from the platform.
If the run collapses, remember: leave early with score above ten and you can still take a partial Coin payout. That rule is covered again in how to earn coins and score and penalties.
Coins without myths
Coins come from finishing routes (score-based), Guard procedures and tickets, Passenger stops, or the Robux shop. There are currently no active promo codes—see the Codes Hub and how to redeem so you are ready later without living on fake lists.
A Guard pairing is worth chasing early: about +2 score per stop for the route, roughly a twenty percent bonus, plus Guard Coin income from procedures and tickets. That is usually better than grinding Passenger forever, but Passenger is still fine while you learn geography.
What changed recently (why veterans sound different)
Version 1.4 reworked signalling, ghosting, and guarding UI, added class-specific door procedures, introduced Class 150 / 230 / 180 trains, and extended the map with Brynmouth coastal running. If a friend teaches you habits from older footage, verify them against version 1.4 and the signalling guide. Ghosting rules and door order especially confuse returning players.
First-hour goals that actually help
- Complete one Passenger journey and note three station names you keep missing.
- Complete one short Driver route with zero SPADs, even if slow.
- Open Looking For Guard once—either as Driver requesting help or as Guard offering it.
- Earn enough Coins to understand the shop categories without buying panic unlocks—read coins and shop.
- Bookmark Guides Hub, Tools Hub, and Updates Hub.
Mistakes to skip
Do not treat emergency brake as a precision tool. Do not depart against a Danger aspect because “the AI did it.” Do not ignore a Guard’s bell or buzzer. Do not spend all Coins on a flashy unit before you can stop a Class 150 cleanly. Do not download executors because a video promised autofarm—read scripts if you need the risk briefing.
Where to go next
After this page: How to drive → Signals and SPAD → How to guard → How to earn coins. When you are ready to spend, compare stock on the trains tier list. For community spaces and how this wiki relates to Fandom and Discord, use the wiki links page.
Welcome aboard—keep the reds red, and let score take care of Coins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for British Railway drivers, guards, and passengers.
Is British Railway free to play on Roblox?
Yes, it is a publicly available Roblox experience. Coins and optional Robux shop purchases unlock more trains and cosmetics over time.
Should I drive or ride first?
Ride once as a Passenger to learn stations, then take a short Driver route with conservative throttle.
Do I need a Guard as a beginner?
No, but a Guard improves score and teaches door discipline. Use Looking For Guard when you are ready.
Are there starter codes?
Not right now. The Codes Hub lists no active promos; earn Coins through roles instead.
What is a SPAD?
Passing a signal at Danger. It stops the operational idea of the move and applies a three-point score penalty.
