How to Guard British Railway
Platform procedure, tickets, and crew signals that boost route score and Coins.
Guarding in British Railway is the co-op backbone of Fourth Rail’s Roblox railway. While Drivers notch power and watch aspects, Guards own platform safety culture, door procedures, passenger service, and a meaningful slice of the Coin economy. This guide assumes you already know the getting started basics and want a full Guard workflow.
Why Guard is worth learning
A Guard contributes about +2 score per stop to the route—around a twenty percent bonus relative to solo stop scoring—while personally earning five Coins per stop procedure and up to forty Coins from tickets at four Coins each. Drivers who understand that math will look for you in Looking For Guard listings. Passengers notice when doors and dwell feel professional. If you like being useful more than staring at mileposts, Guard is the role.
Finding a Driver after v1.4
Version 1.4 reworked guarding UI with clearer pairing intent: Looking For Guard, Friends, and Other-style browsing. Use Friends when you already have a crew in Discord or Roblox friends; use Looking For Guard when you want a serious Driver; use Other when you are open to pickups. Announce your experience level honestly—beginners are welcome if they say so.
Official community spaces linked from the wiki page help you pre-form crews before you even load a server.
Guard controls that matter
Desktop defaults you will press constantly:
- H — whistle
- Y — signal bell toward the Driver
- T / buzzer response loop — Drivers answer; know what you expect them to do
- R — local door when the class procedure needs it
- Door/context keys aligned with class-specific procedures from recent patches
Drivers still own W/S throttle and A/D brake, but your bells tell them when the platform side is actually ready. Cross-train with controls and the controls cheatsheet.
Platform and door procedure
Class-specific door procedures mean you should not autopilot every unit the same way. A Class 150 local feel differs from a Class 180 intercity rhythm or a Class 230’s quirks. Before the train moves, confirm the correct side, complete the procedure, and only then give a departure-oriented signal. Watch the OFF indicator culture around safe departure—rushing a Driver onto a Danger aspect helps nobody.
If ghosting or sighting feels odd after the signalling rework, slow the platform chat and verify visually. Patch context sits in version 1.4 and signals and SPAD.
Tickets and Coin rhythm
Ticket work is not flavour text. At four Coins per ticket and up to forty from that channel per relevant stop cycle, plus five Coins for the stop procedure itself, Guard income can rival casual Passenger grinding (six per stop) while also lifting the Driver’s payout. Combine that with how to earn coins and coins and shop when planning unlocks.
Do not AFK in the brake van expecting tickets to self-complete. Stay present for each station. For railcards, dwell timing, and door-priority rules after the Coastal Update tooling pass, open the dedicated ticket checking page.
Communication etiquette
- Bell/whistle with purpose; spam teaches Drivers to ignore you.
- If the Driver SPADs or overspeeds, keep calls factual—help them recover for partial payout rather than venting.
- If you must leave mid-route, say so early so they can decide whether to continue solo.
- Friends-list Guards should still run full procedure; familiarity is not a shortcut past doors.
Pairing with Driver skills
Great Guards make average Drivers good and good Drivers excellent. Encourage them to read how to drive if they notch up against Caution. Share the score and penalties summary if they do not know why the payout feels low. Suggest easier entries from the routes tier list when a coastal Brynmouth run is clearly beyond the crew.
Practice plan
- Ride as Passenger for one route and watch a competent Guard.
- Take Looking For Guard on a simple diagram.
- Focus only on doors + bell timing for a full route.
- Add ticket efficiency on the next route.
- Graduate to newer stock and busier stations once your procedure is calm.

Guard work is choreography. When the bell, the doors, and the OFF-safe departure click together, the whole server feels like a railway—not a traffic jam.
