British Railway Controls Cheatsheet
Desktop defaults at a glance for Drivers and Guards mid-route.
Printable-minded cheatsheet for British Railway (Roblox) desktop defaults. For prose and technique, use the full controls guide. For role context, see roles overview. Return to the Tools Hub for the sibling score sheet.
Driver power and brake
- W — Throttle up
- S — Throttle down
- A — Brake apply (separate brake-handle trains)
- D — Brake release (separate brake-handle trains)
- E — Emergency brake (last resort)
Station craft prefers early S and measured A/D over spam E. Speeding >5 mph over taxes score—see score and penalties.
Doors, panels, traction
- T — Doors (context) and expected Guard buzzer responses
- R — Local door
- U — Unlock panel
- P — Pantograph
- O — Diesel engine toggle (bi-mode)
Class-specific door procedures matter more after version 1.4. Confirm side and OFF-related departure safety before power. Driving depth: how to drive.
Guard keys
- H — Whistle
- Y — Signal bell
- Coordinate doors with Driver T/buzzer loop
- Use Looking For Guard / Friends / Other to board trains that want you
Guard income and etiquette: how to guard.
Signals pocket card
- Danger (red) — Stop; SPAD = 3 point penalty
- Caution — Slow toward ~45 mph mindset
- Preliminary caution — Plan early
- Proceed — Line speed only with continuous reading
- Respect AWS; do not skip stations
Full explainer: signals and SPAD.
Mini workflows
Departure: stop → class doors → Guard content → OFF/safety context → throttle.
Caution approach: notch down → brake early → stable ~45 mph plan → expect worse.
Bi-mode prep: check O and P before leaving depot, not mid-Brynmouth.
Practice loop
- Touch every key in depot.
- One approach using only power/brake.
- One approach adding doors + Guard.
- Review mistakes via getting started checklist energy.

Extended reminder cards
Throttle card: Notch up only when the aspect story and platform story both allow it. Notch down earlier than your pride wants. Coasting is a tool, not a failure.
Brake card: A applies, D is brake-release for separate-handle stock. Build a stable approach; do not invent emergency artistry at every platform. If you need E often, your planning is late.
Door card: Class matters after v1.4. Confirm side, finish procedure, listen for Guard cues, respect OFF/safety context, then W. Local door R and unlock U are part of professionalism, not trivia.
Traction card: P and O are prep tasks. Wrong mode feels like lag. Check before you accept a route token or leave the depot.
Guard card: H whistle, Y bell, purposeful timing. Tickets need presence. Looking For Guard is how strangers become crews.
Failure to key mapping
- SPAD spike means you needed earlier S/A, not more W
- Speeding flags mean hold S discipline between stops
- Door complaints mean slower T/R procedure with Guard
- Underpowered run means verify P/O
- Ignored AWS means eyes up, acknowledge, then continue
Drill these mappings on routes from the routes tier list and review theory in how to drive plus how to guard. When coins matter, open score and penalties after each mistake so the keybind error becomes a number you remember.
Crew callouts worth standardising
Use short phrases: bell, doors free, holding for OFF, AWS, Caution. Shared language beats novel essays mid-brake. Passengers can even practice callouts from the coach as a learning game without touching Driver controls.
Persistence tip
Leave this cheatsheet open for ten sessions, not one. Muscle memory forms through repetition across Class 150, 230, and 180 differences—not through a single read on your busiest night.
