British Railway Signals and SPAD

Signalling is the difference between a British Railway Driver who banks Coins and one who collects SPAD stories. Fourth Rail’s Roblox experience uses a readable aspect language—Danger, Caution, Preliminary caution, Proceed—plus departure-safety culture around an OFF indicator. Version 1.4 reworked signalling and ghosting, so even veterans should resit this lesson.

Aspect meanings you must memorise

Danger (red) — Stop. Do not pass. Passing is a SPAD and a three-point score penalty. There is no “I thought it cleared” defence that restores those points.

Caution — Expect to slow toward about 45 mph and approach the next conditions ready to stop. It is not Proceed with vibes.

Preliminary caution — An early heads-up that a restrictive sequence is developing. Begin planning brake energy now, not at the last gantry.

Proceed — Line speed is authorised by the aspect language, but only as far as the next information and the permanent limits allow. Proceed is not immunity from AWS, temporary restrictions, or station stops.

SPAD in plain language

SPAD means you passed a signal at Danger. In British Railway scoring, that is a three-point hit and an operational failure. SPADs often cascade: panic brake, miss a platform alignment, skip recovery, then abandon for partial payout. Better to stop short, breathe, and re-enter the move correctly.

OFF indicator and departure safety

Platform departures are where eager Drivers self-destruct. The OFF indicator concept is tied to departure safety—treat it as part of the “may we go?” conversation along with doors and Guard signals. Class-specific door procedures from v1.4 mean the cab and brake van must agree before power. Guards should read how to guard; Drivers must wait for the protocol instead of notching up on hope.

AWS and other penalty cousins

Ignoring AWS is its own penalty path alongside speeding more than about five mph over and skipping stations. SPADs are the headline, but AWS neglect silently taxes Coins. Keep score and penalties nearby while you practice.

Ghosting and sighting after v1.4

The signalling rework arrived with ghosting changes. Another train might not sit in your brain where muscle memory expects. Drive to the aspect you can justify, not to the gap you assume exists. If something looks wrong, reduce to Caution-like speeds even under Proceed until the road makes sense—and then still obey the real boards.

Practical reading technique

1. Call the aspect out loud or in crew chat (“Caution on the home”).
2. Adjust throttle (W/S) before you need dramatic brake.
3. Use A/D brake handle technique for stable approaches; save E for true emergencies.
4. On Danger, stop. Full stop. Reassess.
5. After stopping for passengers, rebuild the departure safety chain before power.

How signals affect Coins
